Weathersfield High School Fire

Wethersfield CT, Wednesday April 25th

A small fire in one of the Wethersfield High School locker rooms started around 5:00 pm on Wednesday.  Firefighters were called in to extinguish the small fire.  Adding to my luck lately of being in the right place at the right time I photographed what I could from where I was allowed to be.  I do have to mention that I was there to photograph high school sports and was in the gym when the alarm sounded.  The coaches quickly took control of the situation and lead students, parents,  and others in the building out safely and orderly.

Brush Fire Along Linear Trail Wallingford

Wallingford CT, Monday April 16 A brush fire claimed about 25 acres Monday evening.  Wallingford firefighters and volunteer firefighters were all called in to battle the massive blaze along the Linear Trail at Community Lake Park. The Record Journal reported the fire on line Monday nite and in print the next day.  I happened to be traveling to a meeting on that side of town and stopped at the entrance of Community Lake Park.  Greeted by a fireman policing the inbound traffic I saw that The Record Journal reporter and photographer were already on site. The vantage point was cut off for any good view of the actual location of the blaze being somewhat north of the entrance, but I knew of a way to see better.  Unlike the house explosion in New Haven a few months back I captured with my instant camera this time I was armed with all my photo gear.  I left the park and headed to the better viewing spot.  I have to say I did arrive pretty much after the main blaze was over but decided to shoot a few.  My intention was to forward the images to The Record Journal if they needed addition images outside their staff photographer.  I have been a regular freelance call for them so I’m sure they were happy to get additional images.  The next day I went to get a copy of the paper happy to see one of my images on the front page. The two images were included in the article.  Left was the cover and the right was inside.

Robotic Competition draws youth teams from around region

Hartford CT, Saturday March 31 was the last round of the Northeast Utilities sponsored FIRST Robotics Competition at the Connecticut Convention Center.  Teams formed of various age groups were challenged to build  robots that could shoot basketballs into various positions at each end of the court. “The FIRST Robotics Competition is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high school students discover the interesting, rewarding and exciting life of engineering. The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of students and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week time frame, using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in competitions designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers and a committee of engineers and other professionals.” Two groups were formed blue and red for each match consisting of three individual teams from around the region over 1500 high school students in all. This was my first time to this event I was very impressed with the level of sophistication and complexity the students accomplished.

In October of 2011 the northeast was hit by storm Albert.  The storm left in its wake several houses and business without power and a considerable amount of damage.  The damage took weeks to clean up.  The power company mainly CL&P took such an extended amount of time to restore power to its customers that a Government investigation resulting inquiring CL&P’s standards and practices for service.  I took this opportunity to see some fall color with a wintry mix.  Traveling to Mackenzie Reservoir in Wallingford CT. to capture this shot.  The combination of three elements fall colors, snow, and the reflection in the reservoir made for an interesting image.
